Meva Energy’s biochar in Kisa has been verified according to the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard, providing a transparent carbon credit for our customers in their sustainability reporting. The verification makes it possible to quantify the amount of carbon stored long-term in the biochar after emissions across the entire value chain have been accounted for. At the same time, the same gasification process produces renewable gas that replaces fossil gas, creating negative emissions.
Since 2024, Meva Energy has been producing renewable gas at its Kisa facility using wood pellets made from local residual streams of biogenic industrial waste. The process produces both renewable biogas, which replaces fossil gas in Sofidel’s tissue manufacturing, and biochar enabling carbon sequestration.
By combining energy production with carbon sequestration, two climate benefits are achieved within the same process. When the carbon in the biochar is stored long-term and emissions across the value chain are accounted for, the process contributes to negative emissions.
Verification according to the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard covers the calculation and monitoring of the climate impact and carbon removal across the entire value chain, including emissions associated with the production, transportation, and use of the biochar. This provides the basis for determining the net amount of carbon that is actually stored.
“This is an important step in our own journey as a company. We conduct our own climate impact assessments to understand the climate benefits of our technology. Now, we can provide carbon credits and carbon removals to our customers for use in their own sustainability reporting, while gaining a better understanding of biochar, says Sara Palander, Sustainability & HSE Manager at Meva Energy.
Earlier this year, Meva Energy’s biochar from Kisa was certified according to the European Biochar Certificate (EBC). The new verification complements the EBC certification by assessing the carbon removals associated with the use of the biochar.
