Green copper production,

Meva Energy has partnered with Elcowire Group to design, build and operate an biogas plant to enable the world’s first fossil-free copper smelting. Through a15-year agreement, Meva Energy will supply 9 MW of renewable biogas to Elcowire's Helsingborg facility, enabling them to replace fossil nature gas with renewable biogas in their copper smelting furnance. This project marks a historic milestone for the metal industry by enabling the world’s first fossil-free copper production in scopes 1 and 2.

Replacing Fossil Gas in Copper Wire Production

Copper melting has long relied on fossil fuels to reach the extreme temperatures needed. But now, that’s changing!  Meva Energy’s innovative gasification technology will enable Elcowire to replace natural gas with renewable hot biogas, derived from industrial biomass residues. This unique biogas technology enables Elcowire to melt copper without the use of any fossil-based fuels.

Europe’s leading supplier of sustainable copper wire

Elcowire Group is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of copper and aluminum wire products for electrification and infrastructure. With over 70 years of experience and production facilities in Sweden and Germany, the company plays a key role in energy transmission, including high-voltage cables and railway electrification.

Elcowire has a strong sustainability agenda and was among the first in the industry to declare its carbon footprint across all three scopes. Now, through its groundbreaking partnership with Meva Energy, Elcowire is now set to become the world’s first copper wire manufacturer to achieve fossil-free production in scopes 1 and 2, reinforcing its position as a pioneer in the green transition.

The agreement builds on a successful feasibility study and specifies that Meva Energy will design, own, and operate an on-site energy plant capable of producing 9 MW of renewable biogas for Elcowire’s Helsingborg facility over a 15-year period.
